Free Jane offers an opportunity for the reading of a short new play by a young (or veteran) gay, bi, trans, genderqueer writer, writing about gender, sex, sexuality, and/ or in which gender, sex and/or sexuality plays a major role. The reading is hosted by Jane, Sky Gilbert’s drag character, and it takes place during Buddies’ Pride. There is an open mic afterwards. With Sky Gilbert in drag as emcee, there is an opportunity before and after for discussion with the audience, and the open mic offers an opportunity for young performers to get up and try out their fictional representations of identity. It can be lively, and sometimes an interesting discussion starts, but all can relax with a drink.
Free Jane 2016/17
This year at Free Jane, there will be a staged reading of Aquarius, written and performed by François Macdonald and directed by Sunny Drake. In April 1975, the Aquarius bathhouse in downtown Montreal was firebombed, killing three patrons, two of whom were never identified or claimed. Aquarius tells the story of two men who met in the bathhouse that night. Originally conceived as part of the 2016/17 Emerging Creators Unit and performed at The 38th Rhubarb Festival earlier this year, Aquarius returns to the stage in a different format.
